Little ways to improve your mood.

Some days, you just wake up in a funk. Maybe you had a mildly upsetting dream, maybe you had a heavy night, or maybe it’s just one of those mysterious bad moods. When that happens, it’s easy to feel like your whole day is ruined; but as a certified Grumpy Person™, I have some experience in this arena. Here are my top five little things you can do to pick up your spirits.

Hydrate.

Get a pint glass and drink two full glasses of water, or make an entire pot of tea and down it. You might need to wee more often, but you’ll feel healthier and more alert.

Clean your flat.

No, seriously. I know the last thing you want to do right now is scrub the toilet, but something about having a de-cluttered, freshly dusted and sparkly space makes everything feel a little better. Personally, I always feel a little stressed if I haven’t swept the floor in a while, and the fumes from your oven cleaner are bound to lighten your spirits…

Do a good deed.

When I joined the cub scouts at around nine years of age, I had to stand at the front of the village hall, do the scout salute, and say,

“I promise that I will do my best
To do my duty to God and to the Queen,
To help other people,
And to keep the Cub Scout Law.”

Whilst my atheistic and republican tendencies prevent me from keeping most parts of this oath, I am still a fan of the Cub Scout Law:

“Cub Scouts always do their best,
Think of others before themselves,
And do a good turn every day.”

Whilst, as with my five-a-day, I more often than not fall short of fulfilling my “one good turn a day” commitment, I do think that people feel better after doing something for someone else, even if it’s something small, like helping an elderly person cross the road, buying their friend a cup of coffee, or discreetly looking away as a dog walker flicks dog poo into a hedge with a stick.

Eat all of your five-a-day in one sitting.

I know it sounds square and kind of like something your mum would say to trick you into getting vitamins, but eating fruit and veg really does make me feel better. As a fairly hardup student without regular access to untinned greens, the effect fresh vegetables has on me is startling. They clear up my spots, raise my spirits, and even stop my bones from creaking.
